Attractions in and around Wittenberg

The Schlosskirche, where Martin Luther published his 95 theses against the abuses of indulgences as well as the Luther House were both added as a monument to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Less than 15 miles from Wittenberg in the Elbaue (the banks of river Elbe) lies the Woerlitz Park.

Goethe experienced the park as "elysian fields".

112 hectares of constantly evolving images visually create new impressions and views.

The castle, summer residence  of prince Leopold III. of Anhalt-Dessau, was constructed by his friend and architect Erdmannsdorff and is considered as the first building of German classicism.

On an island the prince built the Gothic House, where he was able to rest from the public.

From his travels all around Europe the prince brought back ideas which he implemented in his park, including a replica of mount Vesuvius, several bridges and a replica of the Villa Hamilton, the British ambassador's residence in Naples.

Five gigantic machines from the former coal mine are now on display on a peninsula in the flooded pit and make a walkable museum of recent industrial history.

They even build a perfect setting for large events.

The Rabenstein castle is one of the three castles of the Castle Triangle in Flaeming. It was first mentioned in 1251 in a charter of the Earl of Belzig.

Built of boulders and hewn granite blocks it is a medieval jewel and one of the best preserved and most romantic castles in Brandenburg.

A restaurant and a medieval banquet hall offer catering services. In summer medieval shows with jugglers, musicians and knights take place.

The Martin Luther High School in Wittenberg was once a typical GDR concrete building. It has been transformed into a romantic building according to plans of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The castle Oranienbaum is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture of European stature, bulit by the architect Erdmannsdorff.

Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz (1740 - 1817) laid out the garden between 1793 - 1797. He landscaped the park, creating the island of Baroque gardens and part of the Anglo-Chinese park. The pagoda, water features and bridges remained almost unchanged until today and are of paramount importance in Central Europe.
